Bye-Bye 15th Gen: Why Intel Ditched the "i" and Rebranded to "Core Ultra"

 


If you’ve been following PC hardware over the last decade, you’re probably used to a very predictable rhythm. Every year, Intel gave us a new generation: 11th Gen, 12th Gen, 13th Gen, and 14th Gen.

Naturally, everyone was expecting a 15th Gen Intel Core i7 or i9 to hit the market next.

Except… it never happened.

Intel officially retired the iconic "Core i" branding and generation numbers like "15th Gen." Instead, they introduced a brand-new naming scheme centered around Intel Core and Intel Core Ultra.

So, what happened? When did this change, and why did Intel decide to overhaul a brand identity they built over 15 years? Let’s break it down.

 

What Is the New Naming System?

Intel completely removed the famous letter "i" from its lineup. You will no longer see "Core i5," "Core i7," or "Core i9."

Instead, Intel processors are now divided into two main categories:

Intel Core Processors: Standard mainstream chips (e.g., Intel Core 5, Intel Core 7).
Intel Core Ultra Processors: Premium, high-performance chips featuring advanced AI capabilities (e.g., Intel Core Ultra 5, Intel Core Ultra 7, Intel Core Ultra 9).

Additionally, instead of "15th Gen," Intel introduced Series branding (e.g., Intel Core Ultra Series 1 and Series 2).

 

When Did This Change Happen?

June 2023 (The Announcement): Intel officially announced that it was dropping the "i" and changing its naming strategy ahead of its upcoming chip lineup.
December 2023 (The Rollout): The new brand hit the market with the release of code-named "Meteor Lake" laptop chips, officially sold as Intel Core Ultra Series 1.
Late 2024 (The Desktop Shift): What enthusiasts expected to be "15th Gen Desktop CPUs" launched under the code-name "Arrow Lake" as the Intel Core Ultra 200S series.

 

Why Did Intel Change the Branding?

Intel didn't just change the name for fun this was driven by one of the biggest technology transitions in computing history.

1. The Arrival of the "AI PC" Era

The biggest reason for the rebrand is the integration of NPUs (Neural Processing Units) directly into the CPU.

An NPU is a dedicated hardware engine designed specifically to handle Artificial Intelligence tasks (like background blur in video calls, AI photo editing, and local LLMs) without draining your battery or overloading the GPU.

Intel wanted a clear way to tell buyers: "This isn't just a slightly faster version of last year's chip; this is an AI processor." The "Ultra" badge signals that the chip has built-in AI acceleration.

 

2. A Massive Change in Architecture

For years, Intel built CPUs using a single piece of silicon (monolithic design). Starting with the Core Ultra chips, Intel moved to a disaggregated "Tile" (or Chiplet) architecture.

Instead of one single chip, a single Core Ultra processor is made up of separate pieces connected together:

Compute Tile: Houses the main CPU cores.
Graphics Tile: Powered by integrated Intel Arc graphics.
SoC Tile: Handles low-power tasks and houses the NPU.
I/O Tile: Handles connectivity like Wi-Fi and Thunderbolt.

Because the underlying chip technology completely changed, Intel felt it deserved a fresh brand name.

 

3. Cleaning Up 15 Years of Confusion

Let’s be honest the old naming scheme was getting bloated. Terms like "Intel Core i7-13700K 13th Gen" were confusing for average consumers. By resetting the names to Intel Core Ultra 5 / 7 / 9, Intel aimed to simplify buying decisions, similar to how smartphone manufacturers name their premium devices.
